Lempertz offers the last portion of ancient Andean art from an important European private museum which was the highlight of the well–received 30 January 2010 Brussels Pre–Columbian Auction as well as works from other European private collections in a total of 182 lots.
Highlights from the Andean section of the sale include a large selection of Chavin and Mochica ceramics depicting warriors, priests and genre scenes. From the southern cultures there are a variety of Early and Middle Nazca works as well as Paracas and a collection of miniatures in shell and bone.
In the second half the sale concentrates on Central American and Mesoamerican works from various private collections. The full gamut of the stone carving tradition of the ancient New World is represented by masks from the early cultures of the Olmec and Mezcala, a rare Huastec Stone Stele (lot 166, 40/60.000) and a monumental Costa Rican Stone Altar from the late Rene Withofs Collection (lot 151, 45.000/65.000).
Ceramics are well represented with a monumental Veracruz Seated Dignitary exhibited in U.S. museums (lot 169, 40/60.000), an intricately carved Mayan vase (lot 176, 25.000/35.000), a Jalisco Couple once belonging to the illustrator Ray Gilles (lot 165, 22/24.000), and a Chinesco figure rare for its size (lot 163, 15/18.000).
