Auction 961 Vogel Collection

Tuesday, 1 June 2010

Carl Vogel collected his whole life with great commitment and insatiable passion and from 1945, together with his wife Carin, built up one of the most comprehensive and important private collections of contemporary prints. As Professor at the College for Fine Arts in Hamburg, he encouraged numerous artists and established himself as directorate of the Griffelkunst–Association, concerned with broadening the availability of art to a wider public. From this collection Lempertz has selected over 200 important works on paper, sculptures, multiples, graphics and photographs, which will be auctioned on 1 June. Also on 1 June, Venator and Hanstein will be auctioning almost 600 graphic print works from the collection; the focal point lies in the comprehensive offer of contemporary and modern prints.

Joseph Beuys is prominently featured and many highlights of the auction are from this artist. His oil on paper painted Braunraum Maschinerie from 1962 has an estimate of 50/60.000 (lot 1027). The famous Schlitten from 1969 is at 40/60.000 (lot 1036). Sigmar Polke is also present with 27 paper works on ring binder or foolscap paper (lots 1011 to 1127) and with 16 photographic pieces. The works stem mostly from the 1960s, from the beginning of Polke's artistic career. Highlights include a large format, untitled gouache on card from 1988, 35/45.000 (lot 1101), and the mixed media, 69,8 x 99 cm large Fisch mit Brille from 1989 (lot 1102, 35/45.000). As well as this, sixteen partly overworked photographic pieces from Polke will be offered. With the experimental photographic works the artist was working with alchemical elements and coloured over–painting. The estimates are set between 10.000 and 20.000 (lots 1128–1143).

21 Lots are on offer from Gerhard Richter. Eight graphic works stem from the period when the artist was intensively working with the technique of print, among them one masterpiece Hund from 1965 (lot 1154, 20/30.000). The graphic series Familie from 1966 lies at 15/20.000 (lot 1155). The Dieter Roth offerings consist of a total of 27 lots, including many chocolate and mildew objects. Of particular note are the chocolate doused Große Gartenzwerg, made of plastic (lot 1059, 8/10.000), and the complete set of three sunsets consisting of two boxes fixed together with slices of salami (lots 1066–1068, up to 7.000). One striking, simple piece from Blinky Palermo Blaues Dreieck from the year 1969 is valued at 20/30.000 (lot 1148). Under the eleven lots from Andy Warhol, Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn), a screen print from 1967 stands out, estimated at 30.000 (lot 1191).

The high point of the photographic works on offer come from Bernd and Hilla Becher. Six lots from each of four silver–gelatine prints will be put up for sale, which illustrate colliery shaft towers from the 1960s and 1970s; the estimates lie at 15.000 each (lots 1009–1014).
