Auction 962 Modern Art

Wednesday, 2 June 2010 - 3 p.m.

Alexej von Jawlensky’s still-life from 1900, with shiny green apples before a dark background is one of the highlights of the auction with an estimate of 400/600.000 (Lot 459). At 140/160.000 is Variation: Schwarzer Baum from 1918 with Walter Dexel–Provenienz (Lot 460). It is followed by Variation „Das Fest“ from 1919 (Lot 461, 150/170.000). From Wassily Kandinsky comes a further highlight which has been exhibited in many museums, the watercolour Schweres Fallen from 1924. The suspenseful composition from the Bauhaus period is offered at 300/400.000 (Lot 465).

The long unknown, and now rediscovered painting Nu assoupi, Youki, 1924, from Léonard–Tsuguharu Foujitas is another highlight. The largely monochrome canvas from the Japanese artist, who relocated to Paris in 1913, has been authenticated by the author of the catalogue raisonné Sylvie Buisson (Lot 426, 80/120.000). From his period of working on paper, Joan Miró is represented by a very rare gouache monotype from 1977/78 at 90/120.000 (Lot 524). The expressive Kornpuppen, a 1923 canvas from Conrad Felixmüller, with an estimate of 130/150.000, is also one of the high points of the auction (Lot 427). Three water colours from Emile Nolde, including a double-sided, delightful sheet depicting an evening sea and black steamboat, from 1946, is at 120/130.000 (Lot 554). The oil and tempera worked Bodenseelandschaft bei Stein am Rhein mit Burg Hohenklingen from 1940 delivered by Otto Dix is one of the most important lots in the auction (Lot 417, 120/140.000). At the end of September 1913 August Macke travelled with his family to the Thuner See. There the artist produced his most important and successful works. From this year stems the offered piece, a rediscovered, important ink brush and pen drawing Spaziergänger am See, a study for the painting Leute am blauen See from 1913 (Lot 482, 90/120.000). From Franz Marc comes the dedicated, to date unpublished watercolour, from the estate of Heinrich Campendonk, Füchse (Lot 483, 40/50.000). Karl Schmidt–Rottluff is also represented by an excellent sheet from 1923–1925. His water–colour Landschaft mit Karren from 1923 is valued at 80/120.000 (Lot 585). The important 30 piece Olbricht collection includes 21 bronzes from Ewald Mataré (Lots 494–523). At the pinnacle is a widely exhibited key work from 1923, produced on the island of Sylt, Stehende Kuh „Windkuh“ (Lot 494, 50/60.000).
