Auction 956 Steinmetz collection / Härle collection

Saturday, 15 May 2010

On the day of the Old Masters sale, a special auction will take place in the morning of two important collections of late-Gothic painting and sculptures. These 50 lots are being presented in a separate catalogue. The Steinmetz collection comprises 35 lots, among them five sculptures and two fragments of an altar piece; 15 sculptures are part of the Härle collection

Collection Walter Steinmetz
Walter Steinmetz' sole passion was late-Gothic art. The collector who died in 2009, concentrated exclusively on this period. His collection was exhibited in 2007 in the Stadtmuseum Lindau, entitled "Das spätgotische Tafelbild im deutschsprachigen Raum". The focal point are works from the regions along the river Rhine. Highlight among the paintings are two scenes from the legend of Ursula by a Cologne master from the mid-15th century (see left, lot 1508, 100/120,000). Estimated at 80/100,000 is a Hortus Conclusus with a hunt for the unicorn scene, by a late 15th century upper-Rhenish master (see left, tot 1511). At 60/80,000 is a painting from 1400/1410, showing Saints Barbara and Mauritius, by the Master of the Mainz crucifixion (see above, tot 1500).

Collection Carl Härle
The focal point of the collection Härle (1879-1950) are sculptures from the 14th and 15th centuries. Härle, who worked for August Thyssen, was passionate about ancient art, particularly sculptures from the middle ages. He assembled his collection in only twenty years. The major part was donated by his heirs to the Archdiocese Museum Cologne; some 15 sculptures are now being offered at Lempertz.
Highlight is a 1460/70's lime-tree sculpture of St Barbara from upper Swabia (see left, lot 1542, 40/50,000). Estimated at 25/30,000 is an 13th century St Mary Enthroned from the Alp-Region (lot 1536). A wooden sculpture of St Catherine from Flanders about 1480 is estimated at 30/35,000 (lot 1545).
