Auction 953 Paintings 16 -19 Centuries

Saturday, 20 March 2010 - 11 am

Following the successfully established Lempertz auctions of minor old masters in spring and autumn, on 20 March the offer will exclusively include 16th – 19th century paintings with estimates up to 15,000 Euro. Out of 163 lots, 43 will be old masters. The 120 paintings from the 19th century are mainly landscapes, e.g. by Max Clarenbach (up to 10.000), Hugo Mühlig (up to 10.000), Fritz von Wille and Otto Pippel.

Old Masters
Five moderately priced landscapes attributed to Christian Georg Schütz the Elder are estimated at 5/6,000 (lot 29). While Rosa da Tivoli leads to the Roman Campagna (lot 42, 5/7,000), Christian Leberecht Vogel depicts a children’s scene with his two sons (lot 41, 7/8,000).

19th century
Fritz Sonderland shows a young boy being seduced by earthly temptations; this humorous painting is estimated at 5/7,000 (lot 142). One of the popular vistas of Beilstein on the Moselle by August von Wille is part of the highlights (lot 157, 7/9,000 – illustrated above). Max Clarenbach’s charming winter scene of the lower Rhine is estimated at 9,5/10,500 (lot55). A unique fan-shaped painting is the result of a cooperative work by the Frankfurt artists (lot 78, 3/3,500). Otto Pippel and Fritz von Wille are represented by several works (up to 5,000). A painting attributed to Tito Conti presents an elegant young couple in an entrance hall (lot 58, 4/6,000, illustrated at left).

Further offers include three Orientalists with four decorative paintings: Ismael Gentz shows two street scenes in Tunis, Joseph Petzl a smoking Turk before Istanbul’s background, and Carl Wuttke an oriental street scene. Franz von Roubaud is represented by one of his characteristic Caucasian riders (lot 137, 3/4,000).

Venator & Hanstein - Books, Autographs, Prints

Friday/Saturday, 26 / 27 March 2010

Johann Strauss (Sohn)
Collection of autographs
Lot 968, Estimate € 33 000
Marc Chagall, Paris de la Fenêtre
Lot 1259, Estimate € 25 000

Highlight of the autograph section as well as of the two-day auction is a lot with sketches for orchestral compositions and operettas by the Viennese King of Waltz Johann Strauss (junior). They originate partly from the period before his untimely death in 1899, among them scores to his last, unfinished work “Cinderella”. Like a musical legacy, Strauss cites his famous Danube Waltz in its adaptation for the barrel organ. This lot from private German property is estimated at 33,000 Euro.

The old master prints are – as usual – headed by important Rembrandt etchings such as “Christ the Child among Scholars” (5,100), “The Hut and the Haystack” (7,500), or the portrait of Jan Cornelis Sylvius (4,500). Amongst the 18th century artists, Antonio Canaletto is represented by four Venetian vistas (3,000 each). The 19th century shines with a pencil drawing of a Roman vista by Camille Corot (15,000).

Highlight of the modern graphic section is Marc Chagall’s colour lithograph “Paris de la fenêtre” at 25,000, one of 25 artist’s proofs. Max Beckmann is represented by his etching “Niggertanz” from 1922 (4,000). Ludwig Meidner’s drawing of a biblical scene from 1920 is estimated at 5,000. The focal point of this auction day, with almost 350 catalogue numbers, is a major part of the graphic œuvre of Horst Jansen (up to 12,000). The top lot of modern illustrated books is Oskar Kokoschkas “Die träumenden Knaben” (Dreaming Youths) at 10,000.

The oldest object in the auction is a Latin parchment work entitled “Consuetudines Normaniae”, probably created in Normandy around 1300 A.D. It constitutes an early scripture of the mid-13th century, famous law volume “Grand coutumier de Normandie” (9,000).

The city of Cologne is considered to be the most important publishing town in Germany since the early modern period. Venator & Hanstein offers a comprehensive selection of Cologne-related print works from the 16th century onwards. Consisting of nearly 300 pieces, the Cologne section features 120 works from the 16th century (up to 7,500). The section “History and Cultural Heritage” offers a comprehensive view of Court festivities and glorious theatre of the baroque era.

All objects can be viewed in colour in our online catalogue.

The auction will take place at Lempertz, Neumarkt 3.
