Auction 948 Contemporary Art

Saturday, 5 December 2009, 2.30 p.m.

Highlights of the Contemporary Art auction of 412 objects on 5 December are a installation by Ilya Kabakov (€ 300/ 400,000), an abstract painting on alu-dibond by Gerhard Richter (€ 280/ 300,000), and a large-scale work by Emil Schumacher (€ 130/150,000). The group ZERO is represented by Italian artist Enrico Castellani, two works being offered (€ 160/180,000 and € 120/150,000); the German contribution is, among others, by Günther Uecker with several early nail reliefs (€ 60/ 70,000; € 100,000 and € 110/ 120,000). Of historic and art-historic importance is the Haarmann-Frieze by Alfred Hrdlicka (€ 80,000), of victorious air appears the Jörg Immendorff bronze (€ 80/100,000). Strongly represented is the German Informel by Karl Otto Götz (€ 70/ 80,000). Taxed at € 70,000 is a large-scale work by Antoni Tàpies from the 1960’s, Victor Vasarély’s op art painting has an estimate of € 40/ 50,000. The most recent art shines with canvasses by Norbert Bisky (€ 40,000) and Wilhelm Sasnal (€ 28/30,000).

According to Ilya Kabakov, installation is the fourth dimension of figurative art. Proved impressively by the artist is the installation “My Country. The Flies” from 1991. The artist lets flies on nylon cords float in space, for representing human existence and garbage at the same time (lot 461, 300/400,000). Not occupying space as such but yet of considerable size (170 x 250 cm) is a work by Emil Schumacher from 1988, estimated at € 130/150,000 (lot 639). The recent 2004 work by Gerhard Richter can be counted among his characteristic abstract paintings (lot 585,€ 280/300.000). Enrico Castellani is represented by two canvasses in relief, an early, solely of blue fabric, dated 1960, provenance from exclusive Milan gallery Arturo Schwarz (lot 357, € 160/180,000), and a second one from 1997 for € 120/150.000 (lot 358).

Most recent art is – among others – represented by Norbert Bisky, showing in his large-scale painting “Rollschicht – Künstler bei der Arbeit“ (artist at work, lot 339, € 40,000). Slightly lower priced is Stephan Balkenhol’s wooden wooden sculpture of two cows (lot 323, € 25/30,000). The Polish artist Wilhelm Sasnal, presently exhibited in Düsseldorf, is represented with his painting “Tree Parasite with Balls” from 2002 (lot 610, € 28/30,000). A coloured wood sculpture by Thomas Scheibitz from 2004 is taxed at € 40,000 (Lot 605).
