Johann Bernhard Klombeck, pupil of Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, counts among the most important representatives of Dutch Romanticism. Bathed in mild, wintry light, his ‘Landscape with brushwood collectors’ (17.000/20.000 EUR, see left), is the top lot of the Paintings Auction on 1st October. The sale includes a total of 164 paintings from the 15th to the early 20th centuries with estimates up to 20.000 EUR.
With 112 lots, the New Masters constitute the focal point of the auction. Landscapes in particular define the range on offer: alongside another Klombeck landscape (10.000/20.000) are works from Charles Leickert and Max Clarenbach, for whom Lempertz achieved a world record price in the spring season, where each was represented by two signature works. A seascape from Léon Morel-Fatio is on offer, (6.000/8.000) and from the Norwegian Hans Dahl a summer mountain scene (5.000/6.000).
Works from Dutch, Italian, French and German artists are represented in the Old Master section. Amongst the 52 lots, a religious scene from an Augsburg Master stands out (circa 1520, 8.000/9.000), as does a landscape from Hendrik Mommer (7.000/8.000, see left), and a harbour view, in the vein of Poussin’s and Lorrain’s classicism, from a French artist (6.000/7.000).
